PLEASE WELCOME  OUR HUMMINGBIRDS!

April isTime to  Prepare the Arrival of Our Magnificent
             Ruby-throated HUMMINGBIRDS
  1. While our tiny neighbors, the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, bravely travel solo from Central America to your backyard, be ready to greet them with food, water, shelter and love. Enjoy simple ways to roll out the red carpet to welcome our majestic
  2.   angels’ return to their birthplace after a winter paradise vacation.
  3. Attract them to your yard in creative ways with their favorite color red. Tie red garland and bows of ribbon around trees and fences. Incorporate red garden decor, umbrellas, chairs and tables covered in bright red.
  4. As the hummingbird fly low across the somewhat congested human terrain of Ohio and Pennsylvania, they are on the look out for red and bright colorful flowers to fuel their journey to you. Place at least 2 hummingbird feeders far away from each other filled only with your homemade nectar, not plastic bottled old red commercial chemicals sold in stores.
  5. To make your own nectar, that closely mocks the sweet nectar of a flower, combine one part white granulated sugar only with four parts hot water. Tap water must be boiled thoroughly to remove impurities. It is best to use purified or spring water. Boil 4 cups of water then stir in 1 cup of sugar until it is completely dissolved. Do not add red die. It is toxic to hummingbirds. Let cool to add to your feeders. You can refrigerate extra nectar in a glass or ceramic container for up to 2 weeks.
  6. Select feeders that resemble flowers. Avoid yellow and white flower shaped feeding holes, because harmful bees and wasps are attracted to these colors. Ornithologists claim hummingbirds are most attracted to vivid bright colors especially, to red, orange and pink.
  7. Hanging baskets of floral buffets suffice for early spring flowers. Flowers just for hummingbirds are tubular in shape for their long tongue to slurp up nature’s nectar. Other pollinators cannot compete for food from them. Red flowers have the most rich and abundant nectar following orange ones in second place. Hang near your feeders colorful baskets of petunias, especially wave ones, impatience, and fuchsia when temperatures remain above 55 degrees F at night. Include variations of vibrant red and pink geraniums to attract hummingbirds to the feeders, but not for nectar. They can be placed between your buffet baskets to deter squirrels, chipmunks and the number one killer of hummingbirds our beloved cats.
  8. Avoid fatal bird window strikes by placing Anti Collision -UV-Reflective decals on glass windows and doors, where feeders exist. You can purchase these “must have decals” from pet shops and on line.
  9. Water misters, shallow fountains and bubbly moving water provide bathing and refreshment that’s absolutely needed for hummingbirds. Place birth baths near a sheltered area of dense bushes for protection from predators.
  10. Thank you for caring for our super bird, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird!
  11. How to create a happy hummingbird haven in your yard, on a balcony and a small space will be presented in the next article. Inquiries or to schedule a lecture with Maryanne for your group or organization call or text 330-272-7435. Visit www.SaintFrancisPetCare.org

A Tribute to the Life of Raja - the American Mastiff, Our Beloved Mascot for 10 years

Saint Francis Pet Care’s beloved mascot Raja, the American Mastiff, transitioned to the Rainbow Bridge May 8th, 2021. On May 30th he would have celebrated his 93rd birthday.
Many communities in our region had the privilege to meet Raja in person or live on several TV stations and in many newspapers. He served the schools through teaching pet ettiequte to children. He brought love and caring to our nursing home facilities. At our Dog Fun Festivals he lead dog guests into agility activities. He especially liked the tunnel and musical hula hoops. He danced with Maryanne Hoffman, his human companion and trainer, to The Ohio State and the Cleveland Browns football themes for dog lover crowds. He graced many parades throughout the Penn-Ohio area, representing our organization. He was a magnet to especially, children and people of all ages. Most people felt he was the biggest and most adorable dog they had ever seen. A gentle giant he was.

He loved swimming in lakes and pools and dancing the ChaCha with Maryanne.  He had tremendous “play drive”, absolutely no prey drive. All animals loved Raja. He was known to play with wild turkeys and a special cardinal from when it was a fleshing. He was true to the characteristics of an authentic Saint Francis dog - kind, compassionate, loving, gentle, respectful and smart. He put a smile on many faces. At Christmas he dressed in his Santa suit and delivered presents to children from his backpack.
His favorite treats were blueberry frozen yogurt, freeze dried liver and all natural dog flavored jerky. He enjoyed going to dog events and many times won dog contests, as the biggest dog or most unusual dog.He loved to play hide and seek and performed many dog tricks and agility. People were amazed at his ability to jump through his super-sized custom made hula hoops. He had a special dog carriage to pull others.

At public events and in visiting nursing facilities at Halloween, Raja and Maryanne were many characters together: Raja was a spider, Maryanne was his web, Raja was superman's dog with a superman doll on his back and Maryanne was Wonder Woman, Raja was a whale and Maryanne was a mermaid, Raja was Santa Dog and Maryanne was an elf or Mrs. Claus. He wore bells and flashing lights for many festivities and parades He will be immensely missed. Donations are welcomed on his behalf at www.SaintFrancisPetCare.org or at our headquarters- 27 Coral St. Youngstown, Ohio 44510 to continue Raja’s important goals to teach our children in the Cadets for Pets program “compassion in action” toward all animals. Thank you and God bless you, Raja.
